Choosing the Right Missionary Health Insurance
Missionaries have unique needs - home country furloughs, budget constraints, visa requirements, etc. Some companies have designed international health insurance plans especially for missionaries (see Global Navigator below). In addition, most health insurance plans found on this website are well suited for your missionary insurance needs. The key is selecting the plan which best meets your exact needs, situation, and budget. (See Other International Health Insurance Options below)
The first question you need to ask is what type of international health insurance plan is right for your situation? Do you need a long-term or temporary insurance? Will you qualify medically for a long-term insurance plan. If not, what is your best alternative? With over 30 years of health insurance experience, I encourage you to contact me with your questions. (E-mail)
If you are a sponsoring church or institution, then you have a real fiduciary obligation that requires that you get it right. My 30+ years of experience could prove to be invaluable. (E-mail) Note that I only recommend dependable U.S.-Style plans here.
Global Navigator - for Missionaries.
Administered by HTH Worldwide Insurance Services, Philadelphia, PA, USA
Insured by UNICARE Life & Health, or HM Life Insurance Company (varies by state)
Global Navigator > Quotes & Information (opens in a new Window)
(After opening, click "Learn More.")
Global Navigator Plan Highlights:
- Medical limit up to $5,000,000.
- Provides coverage worldwide, with no limit on time spent inside the USA.
- No waiting period for most benefits and services.
- Includes coverage for terrorist events.
- Direct billing with doctors and hospitals in over 180 countries, including the USA.
- Renewable up to age 84.
- A less ambiguous, more consumer-friendly definition of "pre-existing condition".
The "Global Navigator" plan was designed with missionaries in mind. By reducing or eliminating certain benefits, insurance rates are reduced by 15% to 40% or more, compared to the "Global Citizen" plan (see at Long-Term International Insurance).
Below is a comparison of a few key plan differences. For a more complete comparison of "Global Navigator" vs. "Global Citizen," see Comparison Highlights (.doc file, opens in a new Window).
| Comparison Highlights | Global Citizen | Global Navigator |
| Deductible | Policy Year | Calendar Year |
| Renewal Rates same as Rates for New Enrollees? | Yes | No |
| Doctor Office Visits | Unlimited | Max. 4 per Year |
| Benefits for Skilled Nursing Hospice, Home Health Care | Yes | None |
| Chiropractic / Acupuncture | $2000 | $0 |
There's nothing wrong with trading some benefits for a lower premium. The key is to understand the trade-offs.

Other International Health Insurance Options For Missionaries
There are a few international health insurance plans on the market today that include the term "missionary" in their names. However, other than the Global Navigator above, we find no special benefits in these other "missionary" plans. In fact, we find these other missionary plans lacking in so many ways, that we refuse to offer them.
Instead, we believe you will find that the long-term international insurance plans and temporary international insurance plans found here offer a wide range of choices, from which you can select the best choice for your exact needs, situation, and budget.
For example, if you will have health insurance in place upon return to the USA, then we would recommend one temporary plan. If not, then there is another temporary plan choice which allows you to obtain follow-up treatment for a covered condition back in the USA. One temporary plans provide up to $20,000 in coverage for the sudden and unexpected reoccurrence of a pre-existing medical condition, while other temporary plans provide no such coverage whatsoever.
For information or key plan differences, be sure to see our Buy Smart page.
Unless you are familiar with the nuances of health insurance, most people will find that international health insurance plans tend look similar ... until you have a claim. This is why we suggest that missionaries contact us prior to selecting a plan. Once we are able to obtain information about your exact situation, we are able to provide you with a well-informed recommendation, along with specific reasons for our recommendation.
In fact, if we are able to speak directly by telephone, most people tell us that they learn more in 5 to 10 minutes with us than they were able to learn with hours of research elsewhere. Contact Us today for a free, no obligation consultation.
